French 202 is recommended but not required.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is for students who may be contemplating becoming teachers of Core French at the
secondary level, or for intermediate and middle school generalists who want the necessary preparation to
teach Core French in their school setting. The general objective of the course is to help prospective Core
French teachers to better understand Canadian bilingualism, its historical, sociopolitical and cultural
context, to acquire knowledge about principles of second language pedagogy as well as to gain basic
understanding of Core French programs' objectives and contents.
The language of instruction will be mostly English, with a gradual introduction of oral French.
Course objectives:
1)
To prepare students for the career of Core French teacher.
2)
To help students understand the context of French second language teaching in Canada, and in
particular in B.C. elementary and secondary schools.
3)
To enable students to gain knowledge of some current principles of French second language teaching,
as well as to explore summarily programs'objectives and contents
Topics will include:
1)
Understanding of the socio-political background of bilingualism in Canada
2)
Understanding the different educational settings for bilingual education in Canada: Core French,
Immersion and Francophone programs
3)
Introduction to modern principles of second language teaching through an overview of current
research findings
4)
Introduction to the French language through a survey of the aims, objectives and contents of Core
French programs in elementary and secondary schools
5)
Basic knowledge of some teaching principles of French as a second language, such as the
communicative approach and the use of authentic materials in classroom setting
6)
Elaboration of a personalized professional growth plan aiming to fulfill the linguistic and pedagogical
requirements necessary to teach Core French
