Course Description;
This course is designed for teachers, counsellors, education
assistants, administrators and care givers who work with students
and young adults with developmental disabilities. The course will
examine the issue of sexuality and sexual abuse of people with
developmental disabilities and provide participants with background
information, materials and techniques on the teaching of sexuality
and sexual abuse prevention.
Topics will include:
Definition of abuse
Prevalence of sexual abuse
Identification of child sexual abuse
Protocol in reporting abuse
Environmental factors contributing to vulnerability
Developmental disabilities as a risk factor
Characteristics of the sex educator
The subject matter
Materials/resources
Teaching techniques
