COURSE DESCRIPTION
Vygotsky's cultural-historical theory of human development and its contemporary applications in
psychology and pedagogy will be studied.
The course will start with an introduction to Vygotskian theory and a discussion of the Vygtoskian
texts. The second part of the course will be the conference, "Practicing Vygotsky in Schools: The
Gold Key Institute". It will provide students with an opportunity to develop critical, authentic
understanding of essential features of Vygotsky's work and its implications for their practice.
Students will be introduced to the process of applying Vygotsky's work in practical setting by
Vygotskian scholars with experience in Russian, Canadian and American schools. The Gold Key
Project is a contemporary implications of Vygotsky's ideas in education in Russia, which will be
represented at the conference by Dr. Elena Kravtsova, Lev Vygotsky's granddaughter and Director
of the project. Student's report about the conference will be considered as a mid-term paper for
evaluation.
Practical applications in pedagogy (curriculum development and instruction), educational and
school psychology (dynamic assessment), special education (cognitive remediation) and
developmental psychology will be discussed in follow-up the conference part of the course. Each
student will prepare an essay in the field of his/her interest.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Vygotsky's cultural-historical theory of human development and its contemporary
applications in psychology and pedagogy will be studied. Course times are: July 5-7 / 9:30-
12:30; July 10-14 / 8:30-4:20; July 17-21 / 9:30-12:30. It will start with an introduction to
Vygotskian theory and discussion of the Vygotskian texts. Some of the concepts include:
• the Zone of Proximal Development
• mediation and development of higher psychological functions
• the role of dialogue in language and consciousness
• interfunctional relations;
analysis according to units; and
"tool-and-result" methodology.
Nested in the second part of the course is the 5-day conference
"The Gold Key Institute:
Practicing Vygotsky in Schools"
in which students will be required to participate. The
conference will provide students with the opportunity to develop a critical, authentic

If you are already a student at Simon Fraser University you may register by telereg as long
as your $100 deposit for the Summer Semester has been paid. Standard university fees will
