    COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course has been designed to meet the needs of classroom teachers who will be integrating students
with special needs in communication skills. It will emphasize strategies, organization and alternative
techniques to use with students to facilitate their participation in the regular classroom. It will help
classroom teachers plan the support services and materials they will need to integrate these students.
There will be an emphasis on the early elementary years and the communication skills necessary for
success in school. Teachers taking this course will have an opportunity to interact with professional
resource personnel and will participate in at least one field trip. This will be an intensive ten day
experience. The following topics will be included:
    • Communication Disorders
    • Theoretical Frameworks of Language Development
    • At-risk Students
    • Data Collection and Naturalistic Observation
    • Classroom Based Strategies
    • Materials
    • School Based Resources
    • Using the School Based Team
    • The Role of a Speech and Language Pathologist
    • Special Resources and Technology
    COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course the classroom teacher will have a framework for identifying at-risk
students, collecting data, designing classroom strategies, requesting appropriate support services and
making referrals for additional help to school based teams, district, and provincial services.
    COURSE REQUIREMENTS
    • Attendance and participation in all parts of the course.
    • Completion of all reading assignments.
    • The fulfillment of a mutually agreed upon contract between each teacher and the instructor
that will communicate understanding and the ability to apply the theoretical constructs,
methods and materials of the course to their present or expected work situations. Examples and
guidelines will be included in the pre-reading package to allow for consideration of practical
usable projects. Participants are encouraged to consider projects that will help them before the
course begins and to brainstorm those questions that may be appropriate for their course projects.
    • Students should be prepared to function in a student-centered, activity-oriented atmosphere
    throughout the course.
    REQUIRED PRE-READING
A package of pre-readings will be sent to students prior to the beginning of classes. Students will be
charged for the cost of course materials. Payment will be collected at the first class.
