PREREQUISITE:
EDUC 401/402. Instruction given in English
A modern language methodology course in which beginning teachers acquire a variety of approaches,
teaching strategies and curricula for teaching a basic Core French program. The course will begin at
SFU and be completed at Laval University in Québec. Special emphasis will be placed on the practical
use of authentic documents.
COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES
* Reading and discussion of methodology of second language(L2) teaching and learning
* Reading of relevant research literature and articles pertaining to L2 teaching and learning
* Familiarization with a theme based approach
* Building language proficiency through an interactive approach and modeling
* Planning for inclusion of culture in the L2 classroom (The use of authentic documents)
* Teaching strategies with emphasis on communication
* Familiarization with the prescribed learning outcomes as set out in the Core French IRP 5-12
The course will be practical and reflect the Core French IRP (5-12). Participants will have maximum
opportunities to practice the French used in the classroom and will be able to improve their own
language skills. This will be further enhanced during the

weeks spent in Québec. Guest speakers and
field trips may become part of class investigation, if possible according to the group's schedule
