COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will encourage students to explore their own ideas and beliefs about classroom management
and discipline and will support them in finding a workable balance between theoretical constructs and
practical applications. A close examination of individual beliefs about education and a review of parts of
the considerable academic body of work in this area will precede the development of management and
discipline strategies by each student.
The focus for the course will be the relationship between students and teachers in a pluralist and
democratic school setting. The goal will be for each student to develop, a seamless and all but invisible
management and discipline framework that creates space for learning and teaching in the classroom
environment. Personal commitment to this goal and a desire to implement it in the classroom setting will
be central to each student's understanding of the course content and approach.
In order to mirror the intent of this course in evaluation, students will be asked to participate in class, to
reflect deeply on, and share with others their beliefs, and to assess in a realistic and honest way, their
contributions and level of effort. As a result, some classroom time will be devoted to refining the
criteria for assessment and evaluation below:

Report on interviews with practioners regarding management and discipline:
