COURSE DESCRFFION
This course is designed for teachers, counsellors, education assistants,
administrators and care givers who work with students and young adults with
developmental disabilities. The course will examine the issue of sexuality and sexual
abuse prevention. Participants will be provided with background information,
materials and techniques on the teaching of sexuality and sexual abuse.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
• Definition of abuse
• Prevalance of sexual abuse
• Identification of abuse
• Protocol in reporting abuse
• Environmental factors contributing to abuse
• Developmental disabilities as a risk factor
• Characteristics of the learner
• Attitudes toward human sexuality
• Characteristics of the sex educator
• The subject matter
• Materials/resources
• Teaching techniques
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
• Readings as assigned
• Quiz on Ministry protocols on reporting abuse
• One short paper on Rationale for Sexuality Training and Sexual Abuse Prevention
• One long essay on subject/topic to be approved by instructor

GRADING PROCEDURE
Three assignments with marks out of 20, 20 and 35 respectively.
Marks for final assignment will be marked with the following criteria: relevance to
course material, consistency with approved topic, originality, use of reference,
accuracy of information, knowledge of the subject matter, usefulness of completed
assignment, presentation and style, language skills.
