COURSE DESCRIPTION
Participants should have a basic knowledge of the use of computers and productivity software for this course, as well as an
understanding of current issues in the education of students with special learning needs. This course will provide an
introduction to the use of technology used by 'children with special needs in education and rehabilitation. The format
consists of lectures, presentations, demonstrations, learning station activities, group discussions, and project work. The
components of the course include: overview of the use of technology by children with special needs; introduction to
programs and resources that support technology; review, evaluation, and demonstration of software and assistive
technologies; strategies for integrating technology into the curriculum; and the future of technology in education and
rehabilitation.
INSTRUCTOR PROFILE
Elaine Ferguson
is responsible for provincial coordination of SET-BC inservice for teachers in the implementation of
special technologies. She has taught students with multiple handicaps at the Sunny Hill Hospital for Children and
MacCorkindale Elementary School in Vancouver.
Paul Carson
works at SET-BC coordinating a group of pilot projects which explore the provision of services and
resources to a broader range of disability groups. He has been involved in teaching and administering special education
programs in Vancouver and Prince George for over 10 years.

Participants will work on both individual and group assignments during this course. Assignments 1-4 will be graded by
the course instructors. Assignment

will be a group project. These projects will be graded by course participants using a
rating form to be issued at the beginning of the course.
