Course Description:
Special Educators are increasingly more involved in negotiations
with variety of professionals who provide services to handicapped
children. This course is designed to help students work more
collaboratively and in consultation with their colleagues. The course
will help students to integrate theory on collaborative consultation
with research on service delivery and service needs of exceptional
students. Content will consist of three modules:
1.)
theoretical base of collaboration and consultation
2.)
research on efficacy of service needs of exceptional students
3.)
models and strategies for consulting and collaborating in the
delivery of services to exceptional students.
Course Objectives:
1.
Develop a theoretical perspective on collaborative consultation.
2.
Identify the basic consultation and collaborative models.
3.
Discuss research related to service needs of exceptional
students.
4.
Describe a variety of models for provision of service to
exceptional students.
5.
Identify interpersonal styles which facilitate or impede
successful collaboration.
6.
Identify and demonstrate effective questioning, listening, and
negotiating skills appropriate for the collaborative/consultative
process.
7.
Design consultation processes that facilitate mutually beneficial
outcomes.

Class Format:
The course is designed to effect optimal learning experiences for
all participants. Initially, the class will be conducted via lecture
in order to establish a knowledge base in collaborative
consultation. Afterwards, video taper, role play, small group
discussions, situational analysis activities, and demonstrations
will serve to guide our learning experiences.
