COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will focus on the political, psychological, and ethical issues surrounding the lesbian,
gay, or bisexual teacher, inclusiveness of the curriculum, resource centre policy, homophobia,
heterosexism, the lesbian, gay, bisexual student and parent, and dilemmas faced by school
counsellors.
A selection from the following:
• Privilege and oppression: definitions, origins, consequences
• Homophobia and heterosexism: definitions, origins, consequences
• Lesbians, gays, bisexuals: myths and stereotypes
• Lesbian, gay, bisexual (Student) Teacher, Student, Parent
• Inclusive Curriculum
• Inclusive Library
• Challenge to Counsellors
• Strategies for making schools safe, welcoming and inclusive
OBJECTIVES
• to help participants become aware of and informed about the dilemmas experienced by roughly
ten per cent of the school population
• to explore community attitudes towards homosexuality and the ways they impinge on school life
• to review materials that might be illuminating for those interested in this topic
• to explore the ethical dilemmas faced by teachers, principals, counsellors, and librarians with
respect to this topic
• to explore curriculum issues in school subjects, particularly Career and Personal Planning,
history and social studies, literature, and physical education
