    COURSE DESCRIPTION
    The specific focus area for this course is inclusion of learners with special needs. The purpose of the course is to offer
    educators and school administrators the background and skills they need to meet the challenge of inclusion. The course
    will provide a framework for understanding inclusion in the context of current changes in educational systems in British
    Columbia and will assist educators in clarifying their roles in inclusive/collaborative schools. Participants will learn how
    to develop collaborative support systems within their schools and school districts and implement effective classroom
    strategies for learners with special needs.
    Specific topics to be included are:
    A.
    Financing the system
    B.
    The Role and Relationship of the Para Professional
    C.
    Planning for and Anticipating Barriers to Inclusion
    D.
    Inschool Support:
    The School-Based Team;
    The role of the Administrator and Resource Personnel; and
    IEP Planning.
    The course will focus on exemplary practices in the changes from a traditional Special Education model to a
    comprehensive approach to educating children with special needs.
    INSTRUCTOR PROFILE
    Dr. Richard Zigler is a seasoned Student Support Services Director responsible as Change Agent in a number of school
    districts in western Canada and as such, has been responsible for significant changes in meeting the challenges of children
    with special needs. His broad experience in all aspects of the change process including teacher education, inservice and
    realistic approach to consultation, has met with great success.
    COURSE REQUIREMENTS
    - pre-reading assignment;
    - a number of brief articles that support inclusionary strategies;
    - reflective daily journal;
    - major project;
    - self-evaluation.
    Course requirements will focus on the needs of individual classroom teachers to implement inclusion and inschool
    approaches at work.
