PREREQUISITE:
Educ 401/402 or equivalent and certified practising teacher.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Working collaboratively with colleagues regarding successful teaching practices for
low-achieving students involves some specialized skills that are not easily or readily
acquired without instruction, modeling, coaching, and practice. This workshop is
designed for educators whose professional success and personal satisfaction depends
on his/her ability to (1) work collegially with fellow educators in planning instruction,
and (2) use effective problem-solving and communication skills in the process.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Participants in this class will:
1. Have a rationale for collaborating with fellow educators.
2.
Examine research explaining why special education is rethinking its service
delivery system.
3.
Have information on models for collaborating.
4.
Use a process for collaborative problem solving with colleagues.
5.
Identify interpersonal cognitive styles of self and others.
6.
Practice effective communication skills during problem solving.
7. Design comfortable and effective partnerships for co-teaching.
8.
Be able to anticipate conflict and manage resistance.
9.
Have information on how to overcome major barriers to effective collaboration.

3. Design a consultation (problem-solving) process that you believe will work for you.
4.
Write reaction papers (minimum
two
typewritten pages in length) to each chapter
in the text,

person submits a copy of the consultation (problem solving) log and constructive
feedback in written form from the consultee. (One log for each person).

articles related to the topic of collaborative consultation. The first page is an
overview of the article; the second page
must
be an explanation of
how
and
why
the
information applies to your situation.
3.
Select one book related to the topic of collaborative consultation. Discuss this
choice with the instructor. Write a critique (minimum 10 typewritten pages)
discussing
how
and
why
the information applies to your work situation.

Outline a plan for implementing or expanding your role as a collaborative consultant
or co-teacher in your school or district. Issues to address in your paper include (a)
anticipated outcomes, (b) rationale and benefits, (c) getting district support (d) process
for collaboration, (e) qualitative and quantitative evaluation data, (1) roles, workloads,
and responsibilities, (g) time for collaboration for both general and regular educators,
(h) resources required, (i) record-keeping forms and checklists necessary, (j) initial
target groups, (k) planning team, and (1) staff development needs.
Design a project of more value to you in your situation. Briefly outline its rationale
and major components. Discuss your project with your instructor to secure approval.
