Fall Semester, 1990
On August 27-29, 1990, the Nelson School District will offer a 3-day Summer
Institute in Teaching for Thinking. Topics addressed during the institute will
include:
o using "big ideas" as a focus for curricular integration;
o planning learning experiences to develop higher level thinking;
o developing a supportive thinking environment in the classroom;
o extending students' ideas through questioning and responding;
o evaluating students' development in thinking.
As a follow-up to the Institute, participants may elect to undertake a 3-credit
implementation course during the fall semester. Teachers who decide to take
the special topics course are responsible for identifying a focus of interest and
developing an action plan for a teaching for thinking project in their own
classrooms. The projects will be completed during the fall, under the
supervision of the S.F.U. instructor and aTfT resource person identified by the
Nelson school district. Requirements for completing this course include:
o attendance at the 3-day Institute August 27-29;
o completion of an implementation plan using a format provided by the
instructor, by September 04, 1990;
o implementation of the project in the classroom;
o maintenance of an ongoing reflective journal documenting and
evaluating the implementation process;
o participation in district-based seminars for course participants;
o completion of readings in teaching for thinking;
o submission of a project summary to the S.F.U. instructor by November
30, 1990.
S.F.U. course instructor will be Pat Holborn.
Registration for this course will be completed at the end of the Summer Institute.

Course fees for the fall semester are $188.
