Course Description:

This course is designed to provide an introduction to the use of

technology to meet the unique learning needs of special education

students. The nine day format will consist of lecture, discussion and

lab experiences.

The components of the course include:

1)

Review of relevant research -

*Review of relevant research of technology in education.

*Rationale for using technology with special needs students.

2)

Survey of the use of technology in learning assistance and

learning disability programs -

*Review of the innovative uses of technology for special needs

students in British Columbia.

*Survey of successful applications of technology for learning

assistance and learning disability students throughout Canada

and the United States.

3)

Strategies for integrating technology into the curriculum -

*Review and discussion of the integration of technology into the

regular and special education curriculum.

*Development of strategies for the use of technology to modify

and enhance the regular curriculum for special needs students.

*Principles of hardware selection.

*Introduction to the use of adaptive peripheral devices to assist

learning disabled students, e.g. speech synthesizers, touch

windows, expanded keyboards.

Review and evaluation of software for special needs students -

*Principles of software and selection.

*Guidelines for evaluating software to meet specific needs.

*Software review.

*Customizing software to meet specific needs.

*Creative use of software to meet the unique needs of learning

disabled students.

*The Learner Profile and the Special Needs Student.

6)

Introduction to the services and facilities of the Special

Education Technology - British Columbia (SET-BC) program -

*Presentation on the SET-BC program.

*Demonstrations of special education software and hardware.

7)

Introduction to the emerging technologies and their

applications to special education -

*Demonstrations of technology involving the use of multi-

media.

*Demonstrations and access to information through the use of

telecommunications featuring Applework and The Apple Global

Education Network.
