Technology for Special Needs Students

Course Description:
This course is designed to provide an introduction to the use of technology to
meet the unique learning needs of special education students. The nine day
format will consist of lecture, discussion and lab experiences.
The Components of the course include:
1)
Review of relevant literature and computer research studies. Rationale
for using technology with students with learning difficulties. Survey of
the use of technology in learning assistance and learning disability
programs. Review of innovative uses of technology for special needs
students in British Columbia.
2)
Introduction to the services and facilities of the Special Education.
Technology - British Columbia (SET-BC) program. Demonstrations and
lab experience with special education software and hardware.
3)
Review and evaluation of software for special needs students. Guidelines
for evaluating software to meet specific needs. Modification of software
to meet the unique needs of learning disabled students. Preparation of
Software Review Unit.
4)
Review and evaluation of hardware for special needs students.
Introduction to the use of adaptive peripheral devices to assist learning
disabled students, ie. speech synthesizers, expanded keyboards, and
touch windows.
5)
Strategies for integrating technology into the special education and the
regular curriculum. Development of Curriculum Integration Plan to
modify and enhance the regular curriculum for special needs students.
Introduction to Cooperative Learning and Computers.
Introduction to the use of computers for the development of Individual
Educational Programs (IEPS).
6)
Introduction to emerging technologies and their applications to special
education. Demonstrations and access to resource information through
the use of telecommunications.
