Description of Course
This course begins the first day of the History/Geography Summer Institute at Simon
Fraser, August 22, 1989 and continues through the Fall semester. Students enrolled in
the course are expected to attend the four days of the Summer Institute as well as three
special credit sessions August 23, 24 and 25 at 8:00 a.m. During the Institute students
will be presented with a more thorough outline of course expectations, assignments,
readings, and course topics. Since the course will make use of computer communications
and teleconferencing teachers will be expected to become familiar with these methods
through attending a special session at the institute.
The purpose of this course is to assist teachers in the implementation of the new History
12 and Geography 12 curricula. The course will address curriculum content as well as
learning processes. With guidance from the instructor and teaching assistant
participants will prepare a self-directed learning contract which will assist them in
implementing in their schools a designated portion of the History 12 or Geography 12

This course encourages teachers to examine issues in curriculum and in implementation
as well as be presented with theoretical underpinnings and issues of their subject area.
