Course Description
Culture, according to Yon (2000), is elusive, full of complexity, contradiction and fluidity. From both
theoretical and practical approaches, this course explores, examines and problematizes culture through
an international and intercultural lens. We critically unpack how the reality of our
socially-politically-economically constructed dominant culture that breeds classism, ethnocentrism,
racism, sexism and homophobia acts to create and marginalize minority cultures and deny certain student
identities inside and outside the Canadian classroom. Attention is also given to the study of popular
culture and counter-culture. Through a variety of international and intercultural, global and local, and
multicultural and pluralistic perspectives on education, we inquire about and search for socially
progressive pedagogical approaches and practices that can help to foster a more inclusive, equitable and
diverse education for all students.
Education 370 is designed for practicing educators, pre-service teachers and students interested in
exploring and discussing ideas on international and intercultural issues as they intersect local and global
education and schooling. The course is designed to expose students to a variety of contemporary
socio-cultural theories, promote active and critical discussions and thinking, and encourage personal
written reflections and academic inquiry. Classes are comprised of lectures, group discussions,
hands-on activities, media viewings, peer presentations, and short writing exercises. A more detailed
course outline with will be provided on the first day of class.
