COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is specifically designed to meet the needs of students entering the
Professional Development Program (PDP) in New Caltec. It is intended to introduce
students to aspects of teaching, learning and education in British Columbia today. In
order to begin to develop an understanding of classroom practice, systematic
observations in school settings will be required. The course recognizes that the process
of becoming a teacher is developmental and will, therefore, be flexible in approach in
order to provide opportunities for individual growth.
Topics to be explored on campus will include:
• the nature of teaching and learning
• children as learners
• observation methods
• teacher-student relationships
• beliefs and biases
• professionalism
• the changing role of schools
• "Year 2000"
Students will be expected to share their skills and expertise and to help each other
develop new strategies for working with children.
