INTRODUCTION TO THE TEACHING OF FRENCH IN CANADIAN SCHOOLS

Description of Course:
This course is intended for third or fourth year
students of French, francophone students, prospective French Immersion and
French second language teachers, and for beginning teachers who wish to
explore the area of French teaching in Canadian schools. A combination of
lectures and discussion will be used as a means for exploring such areasas:
1)
the evolution of
French teaching in Canadian schools
2)
the role of the governments and associations in the promotion of French
second language education for Canadian students in elementary and
secondary schools
3)
the linguistic and pedagogical competences of the French teacher and the
desired preparation to enter the field and succeed In it.
Prerequisites:
the course is given in French but students are allowed to
write their assignments in English or French.
Objectives of
the Course:
the objectives of the course are to inform all
interested persons including prospective French immersion or French second
language teachers better understand this fast developing educational field in
Canada and better prepare themselves to enter the profession. Although a
National perspective will be presented, there will be a special emphasis on
the British Columbia situation.

Specific Objectives:
In this course the students will be able to:

Acquire a better understanding of the socio-political background of
bilingualism in Canada.
2.
Understand the influence of governments, the general public and
associations in the promotion and rapid growth of French teaching in
Canadian schools.
3.
Understand the differences between bilingualism for the majority-
language child and bilingualism for the minority-language child.
4.
Acquire a general knowledge
of research findings as they relate to French
immersion and French second language programs.
5.
Discuss issues of current concern In the teaching of French in Canadian
schools.
6.
Acquire an understanding of the linguistic and pedagogical
requirements needed to become
a good French immersion, Programme-
cadre or French second language teacher.
7.
Acquire a basic knowledge of aims and objectives of French programs in
elementary and secondary schools.
8.
Acquire a
basic knowledge of the course content of French programs in
elementary and secondary schools.
