This course is intended for third or fourth year students of French,
for prospective French immersion and French second language
teachers, and for beginning teachers who wish to explore the area of
French teaching in Canadian schools. The course is given in French
but students are allowed to write their exams in English or French.
GENERAL OBJECTIVE
The general objective of this course is to help prospective French Immersion or French
second language teachers better understand this fast developing educational field in Canada,
the research finding relating to French second language and the present methodology and
curriculum used in teaching French Immersion and Basic French classes.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
In this course the students will be able to:
1.
Acquire a better understanding of the socio-political background of
bilingualism in Canada.
2.
Understand the influence of governments and associations in the promotion
and rapid growth of French teaching in Canadian schools.
3.
Understand the differences between bilingualism for the majority-language
child and bilingualism for the minority-language child.
4.
Acquire a general knowledge of research findings as they relate to French
Immersion and French second language programs.
5.
Discuss issues of current concern in the teaching of French in Canadian
schools.
6.
Acquire a basic knowledge of aims and objectives of French second language
programs in elementary and secondary schools.
7.
Acquire a basic knowledge of the course content of French second language
programs in elementary and secondary schools.
8.
Acquire a good understanding of the linguistic and pedagogical qualities of a
French teacher.
9.
Acquire a good knowledge of the present trends in the methodology of French
second language.
10.
Acquire a good knowledge of the methodology used in teaching a French
Immersion and Basic French classes particularly the communicative approach.
