COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Increasingly, the face of Canadian schools is changing as students from a variety of cultures and
language backgrounds enter our classrooms. Designed for the non-ESL specialist, this course will
help the classroom teacher:
1)
understand basic second language learning theory, and the philosophy of integration;
2)
understand the background knowledge necessary in working with ESL children and their
parents;
3)
develop teaching skills to integrate ESL students into the elementary classroom.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Course evaluation will be decided upon during the first class meeting. Assignments will be of a
practical nature with some group work assigned.
