EDUC 260 (Learning and Teaching Through Technology)
Course Description:
This course offers an introduction to the field of Educational Technology, with an emphasis on efforts to
reform schooling through the use of computers. Through readings, project work, and a combination of
on-line and in-class discussions, we will survey several major traditions of research and development in
this field. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the arguments and assumptions that each tradition
in Educational Technology makes about how learning happens, what constitutes a valuable educational
outcome, and how we would know if it was achieved. We will use this understanding of each tradition
to understand and analyze the educational technologies that they produced.
Learning Outcomes:
In this course you will:
1. Become familiar with the major traditions of design for educational technology.
2. Develop an understanding of the interrelationships between technology, learning theory
and educational reform.
3. Compare different perspectives on what constitutes a valuable educational outcome, and
how we can evaluate if it has been achieved.
Course Assignments and Evaluation:
• On-line and face-to-face discussions of course materials
(25%)
• Research paper focusing on your choice of one of the traditions of R & D covered in the course
(35%)
• Peer review of two other students' draft papers (10%)
• Final quiz (30%)
Readings:
There are no required textbooks. Photocopies of all required readings will be distributed by the
instructors in class, and a reading fee charged. Students should make payment for readings by cheque
payable to Simon Fraser University.
