60 credit hours (previous theatre background not required)
Course Description:
This course will explore the learning that happens through theatre-in-education, with a focus on role
drama, playbuilding, theatre for social action, and scripted work.
Objectives
'introduce participants to a variety of theatre-based activities
introduce participants to theatre as a vehicle for learning and social action
'introduce participants to performative inquiry as a means of research & learning.
Requirements
1.
In groups, participants will design and/or participate in a role drama and write a reflective piece about
their experience and learning. Collaboration, choice of action, and reflection will be the focus.
2.
As a class, participants will create and perform a play around a social issue of their choice.
Participants will lead or participate in a debriefing circle to discuss their experience. The relationship
between props and metaphor will be explored.
3.
In groups, participants will write, direct, & perform.a 10 minute one-act play. Participants will write a
reflection of their experience. Relationships, motivation, and hidden agendas and script interpretation
will be the focus.
4.
Participants will see one theatre piece within the term that will accompany a written critique.
Production values and performance selection will be discussed (i.e. what matters?)
5.
Each participant will write about a critical moment (Appelbaum's stop) in their experience of the
course, what they learned, and why it matters.
