PREREQUISITE: 60 credit hours
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This class will explore the languages of dramatic and kinaesthetic performance with a focus on the
implications of integration into a variety of contexts.
Through investigations both formal and narrative of these languages, we will build short compositional
studies based on the following themes;
• Improvisation
• Choral work, animating poetry
• Play building (guest)
• Poetic narrative
• Prop manipulation and metaphor
• Role drama (guest)
• Social justice in drama
• Artists in residence and the resident artist
Each class will involve a physical warm up then skill development in compositional, analytical and
critical approaches to performance. It will also include small projects leading to one final project
whereby the students will be working in partners and small groups creatively. Projects will be critiqued
as a group with various readings to augment the critical analysis.
Although class warm up will be led by Kathryn Ricketts, students will sign up to lead a
physical/dramatic exercises lead by teams of two.
Students will be asked to choose one book as their course reading and report on its relevance to the class
as well as keep an ongoing journal of reflections.
Students will also see one theatre piece within the term which will accompany a written critique
Individual mid term check-in will be booked in the 7th week of classes
Outcomes of the course
Students will learn compositional/ critical skills in performance with a knowledge and practice of
implementation in a variety of practices.
A variety of skills will be gained in framing, integrating and juxtaposing kinaesthetic and dramatic

Class engagement
• Classes are based on active exploration with solo and group assignments involving both brief and
extended
working periods.
• An integral part of this process is class participation in critiquing and developing an articulated
language of
constructive evaluation and reflexivity.
• The classes are often interjected with exercises demonstrating practical solutions to common
compositional/
pedagogic challenges.
• Final compositions will be assigned and performed informally.
• Students should be prepared to perform course assignments for the class.
• Rehearsal times for course assignments will be primarily inside class time
