DESCRIPTION
T
his course deals with teaching theatre in an educational context. It will develop knowledge of theatre skills
and introduce students to a variety of approaches and techniques for teaching theatre and doing theatre in
schools.
OBJECTIVES
1.
To introduce students to a variety of approaches and techniques for teaching theatre and
doing theatre in the schools.
2.
To foster an understanding of theatre as an art form.
3.
To develop knowledge of theatre skills and theatrical conventions.
4.
To have students engage in critical discussion regarding the educational value of theatre.
TOPICS
1.
The educational value of theatre.
2.
Acting (character, voice, movement).
3.
How to direct (preparation, script interpretation, blocking, the rehearsal process).
4.
Technical Theatre (scene design, stage lighting, props, make-up, costumes).
5.
The role of the producer/teacher (publicity, fundraising, all the "extras").
6.
Pedagogical issues in teaching theatre.
REQUIREMENTS
1.
Director's analysis for a scene and prompt book - 40%
2.
Scene Presentation (includes rehearsal log) - 30%
3.
Article Presentation - 20%
4.
Participation (includes leading a warm-up exercise) - 10%
