DESCRIPTION
This course deals with teaching theatre in an educational context. It will develop knowledge of theatre
skills and introduce students to a variety of approaches and techniques for teaching theatre and doing
theatre in schools.
OBJECTIVES
1.
To introduce students to a variety of approaches and techniques for teaching theatre and
doing theatre in the schools.
2.
To foster an understanding of theatre as an art form.
3.
To develop knowledge of theatre skills and theatrical conventions.
4.
To have students engage in critical discussion regarding the educational value of theatre.
CORE TOPICS
• The educational value of theatre
• Director's preparation, script interpretation, blocking, scene design, stage lighting and stage
makeup in the context of theatre in schools
• Pedagogical issues in teaching theatre
OPTIONAL TOPICS
• Script selection
• Casting
• The rehearsal process
• Stage management
• Alternatives to traditional scripts for use in school contexts
REQUIREMENTS
1.
Director's analysis for a scene - 30%
2.
Prompt book for a scene - 30%
3.
Presentation of a scene - 30% (including submission of a rehearsal log)
4.
Participation - 10%
