BUILDING ON REFLECTIVE PRACTICE

Course Description
Building on the experiences in EDUC 252, prospective teachers will
continue to develop their reflective practice. Educational issues related
to the
caring for children
and the
creation of learning
communities
will be fully explored. Prospective teachers will spend
time in classrooms exploring the importance of connected learning
experiences for children.
Required Resources
The Challenge to Care in Schools-an alternative approach to education , by
Nel Noddings (1992) New York, NY: Teachers College Press
Collection of readings which reflect current educational issues and
practices, given out by instructor on a needs basis
Course Outcomes
Students will:
Become aware of some of the current major questions and issues in
education, including the ethic of care in schools and the importance of
learning communities
Meld theory and practice through reading, class discussions,
classroom observations, practice in classroom, and self reflections
Develop interpersonal skills through seminars and field experiences
Gain knowledge and develop skills, attitudes concerning the planning
of effective, connected learning activities for children

Assignments will include those noted below, and will be responsive to the
developmental needs of the students as the course unfolds.

research, preparation and presentation of an "I-Search" paper
which deals with an educational issue or concern

Evaluation
Evaluation will be based on both theoretical and practical assignments,
including professional reflections, observation assignments, the
completion of unit plans, an I-Search paper, and a final reflection paper.
Criteria for grading will be discussed.
SPECIFICS
Ed 352 is a four credit course comprising of seminars and field
experiences each week. Seminars are held on Fridays from 9:00-1:00,
unless otherwise stated. Field experiences take place on Wednesdays from
9:00 a.m. until 12 noon. Student teachers are assigned in pairs to a
classroom for field
experiences. During the field experiences, student
teachers will be expected to work with students in the classroom,
complete focused observations as assigned in seminars and teach three
sets of three consecutive lessons (9 lessons in total)
Big Idea of Ed 352
The development of the teacher as a person, in interactions with others
and within the classroom life will be enhanced by discussion, reflection
and repeated practice.

The student teacher will:

ASSIGNMENTS
All assignments are to be handed in on the due date except when an
alternate date has been prearrange with the instructor.
Written assignments will be completed neatly with attention to detail.
Professionalism will be evident in all assignments.
