COURSE DESCRIPTION
• Literacy: review of the theory/ applications to literacy instruction
• The purposes of literacy instruction and the role of the instructor
• The literacy learner
• A historical overview of approaches: "bottom up" approaches, language experience, whole language,
Freirian education
• Linguistic varieties: implications for literacy instruction
• The theory behind the practice: what is understood by reading and writing?
• Setting goals, planning lessons, assessing progress
• Literacy programs in Canada and other parts of the world
OBJECTIVES
• To reflect on the literacy theory studies in Education 341 and its application to literacy instruction
• To arrive at a historical understanding of the development of different approaches to adult literacy instruction
• To survey current approaches to literacy instruction
• To arrive at a critical understanding of some adult literacy programs in Canada and other parts of the world
