Course Description
The primary objective of this course is to make students aware of
the role of literacy in social, economic, and cultural development of
societies and individuals. Students will gain an understanding of the
consequences, costs, and values associated with or attributed to
literacy. The course will examine the history of literacy, the ways
in which literacy has been defined, and the various ways societies
have tried to increase literacy. We shall analyze the broader
consequences of literacy as well as examine and compare empirical
research and conceptual studies in literacy.
