COURSE DESCRIPTION
What does it mean to have a career? How do individuals end up on certain career paths? What can
teachers and counsellors do to assist students and clients with the difficult tasks and decisions associated
with career development? This course is designed to explore these and other such questions through an
introduction to the theory career development and practice of career counselling and career education, as
well as the implementation of career services in various settings. In particular, the course will cover:
• historical and cross-cultural perspectives on the meaning of work
• theories and assessments based on decision-making, developmental, social learning, sociocultural,
and
postmodern frameworks
• career development in, and counselling considerations with, diverse populations
• career education and career counselling in various educational and community settings
• moral and ethical issues in career counselling and education
The course also will include an experiential component in which students will be expected to apply
theoretical concepts to their own process of career development.
