What does it mean to have a career? How do individuals end up on certain career paths? And what can
teachers and counselors do to assist students and clients with the difficult tasks and decisions associated

This course is designed to explore these and other such questions through an introduction to the theory
and practice of career development and career education, as well as the implementation of career services
in various settings. In particular, the course will cover:
• historical and cross-cultural perspectives on the meaning of work
• theories and assessments based on decision-making, developmental, social learning, sociocultural,
and postmodern frameworks
• career development in, and counseling considerations with, diverse populations
• career education and career counseling in elementary, secondary, post-secondary, and community
settings
• moral and ethical issues in career counseling and education
The course also will include a substantial experiential component in which students will be expected to
apply theoretical concepts to their own process of career development.
