DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to both the theoretical and
practical aspects of career development. What does it mean to have a career? How do people end up working
in different jobs? What work-related issues concern people at different life-stages? How can teachers and
counsellors provide quality career services to their students and clients? These are the types of questions that
will be discussed in this class. In addition, diversity and contextual issues will be explored, including career
issues related to gender, ethnicity, ability-levels, and social class. There is a large experiential component in
this course and students will be expected to apply theoretical concepts to their own process of career
development.
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, it is expected that students will be able to:
• understand the different theoretical constructs of career development
• compare, contrast, and critically evaluate career development theories
• provide examples of how career development theories are implemented in educational and counselling
contexts
• explain how the career development process and career needs can vary amongst diverse populations
• apply theoretical concepts to understand their own and others' career paths.

0velopment.
A career theory will
be used as the basis for this exploration. The intent of this paper is to provide students with the opportunity to
apply theoretical concepts to the reality of a particular life experience.
Career Fair Project
In groups of 3 or 4, students will choose a career-related topic to research and then they will present the
information in the form of a 3-panel poster board display. The research will include literature searches,
interviews with people or agencies, internet searches, etc. Displays must be informative, visually appealing,
engaging and interactive, and include a poster board, written handout, game or other interactive component,
relevant objects, a running video or DVD, metaphors or stories, photos, etc. Possible topics must be related to
career counselling issues, and may include inquiries into, "Culture and Career Expectations," "Women's
Dilemmas in Choosing Careers," or "Using Technology in Career Counselling." We will hold a Career Fair
for our class and invited others to showcase these projects.
