Course description:
What does it mean to have a career? How do individuals end up on certain career paths? And what can
teachers and counselors do to assist students and clients with the difficult tasks and decisions associated
with career development?
This course is designed to explore these and other such questions through an introduction to the theory and
practice of career development and career education, as well as the implementation of career services in
various settings. In particular, the course will cover:
historical and cross-cultural perspectives on the meaning of work
theories and assessments based on decision-making, developmental, social learning,
sociocultural, and postmodern frameworks
career development in, and counseling considerations with, diverse populations
career education and career counseling in elementary, secondary, post-secondary, and
community settings
moral and ethical issues in career counseling and education
The course also will include a substantial experiential component in which students will be expected to
apply theoretical concepts to their own process of career development.
Evaluation:
Final grades will be based on:
- Career Fair Project (30%)
- Personal Application of Theories Paper (40%)
- Final Exam (30%)
