DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to provide the students with the knowledge, skills and understanding
required to construct and apply various methods of classroom management and discipline. This
course will include an examination of contemporary approaches to classroom management,
including consideration of the legal, organizational and management issues apparent in today's
schools. The major goal of the course is to enable students to comprehend the basic principles and
tenets of a number of management approaches and to translate these principles into specific teaching
strategies and skills.
OBJECTIVES
• Study different models of classroom management and examine their underlying assumptions.
• Examine the complex nature of the classroom and the teacher's role within it.
• Examine different ways of dealing with specific issues and conflicts in, and around, elementary and
secondary schools.
• Study methods of managing student behaviour in proactive, rather than reactive, ways.
• Clarify and articulate one's own goals and beliefs concerning classroom management and
discipline.
REQUIREMENTS
• Class attendance and participation
• In class presentations, assignments and examinations of case studies
• Readings from text(s) and articles accompanied by journal responses
• Development of a personal management plan and/or resource manual
