COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Year 2000 document asks all educators to rethink traditional assessment and
evaluation models. A number of ideas have been suggested but little in the way of practical
suggestions which would receive teacher, parent and student agreement. Assessment and
evaluation in education are not well understood even by the advocates. This course is
designed to assist both teachers and administrators develop new understandings, insights
and tools in both educational assessment/evaluation and in student
assessment/evaluation.
OBJECTIVES
This course is designed to assist the participants in being able to:
2.1 distinguish between assessment and evaluation;
2.2 develop criteria for evaluation based on sound educational principles;
2.3 articulate and distinguish between norm referenced and criterion references
testing in order to apply appropriate tools for specified purposes;
2.4 determine "standards" and authentic assessment/evaluation;
2.5 work with learning descriptors in reporting student progress with the
curriculum;
2.6 gain a better sense of what students are able to do with respect to attitudes, skills,
and knowledge;
2.7 effectively report to parents on student progress;
2.8 gather a variety of techniques to use in the school for assessing and evaluating;
2.9 use a variety of situation specific program evaluation methodologies; and
2.10 evaluate the evaluation

* The project will be on a topic related to assessment and evaluation stemming from
the course topics and objectives, agreed to in advance with the instructor. It will be
designed to be practical in nature so that the participant may apply the learnings in
an educational setting. Criteria will be shared in class.
