INTRODUCTION TO COUNSELLING THEORIES

Educ 220 or equivalent and 60 credit hours. Students who have credit for Educ

323 for further credit.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to provide the student with an introduction to major theoretical approaches that
underlie the work of counsellors assisting persons with emotional and/or behavioural difficulties. The
course will cover theories based on psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, existential, and post-modem
frameworks.
REQUIREMENTS
1.
In-Class Learning Checks (40%)
Learning checks will take place following the completion of each general unit. There will be four
learning checks in total, each worth ten percent of the final grade.
2. Case Studies (60%)
The case studies will provide students the opportunity to apply theoretical constructs. Each case will be
based on an assigned fictional film character. There will be two case studies in total.
Case Study # 1 (20%)
