COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will provide students with an overview of theory, research
and practice concerning the social and emotional development, social interactions, and relationships of
children and adolescents during the school years. Particular attention shall be placed upon the role that
peer relationships play in development, the role of the school in supporting positive interactions among
students and between students and teachers, and the role of the family in a child's emotional and social
development.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
(1)
To deepen our theoretic understandings of the significance of the child's social relationships within
the culture of the school.
(2)
To construct a deeper understanding of environmental influences on the social lives of children.
(3)
To examine and evaluate programs aimed at supporting social and emotional development.
REQUIREMENTS:
Students shall complete a series of short reflections based upon the assigned
weekly readings. There will also be an in-class final exam drawn from the readings and class notes.
Participation is mandatory and will contribute to the final grade.
