Description:
This course will provide students with an overview of theory, research, and practice concerning the social and
emotional development, social interactions, and relationships of children and adolescents during the school
years. Particular attention will be placed on the role of peer relationships in development, the role of the
school in supporting positive interactions among students and between students and teachers, and the role of
the family in social and emotional development.
Objectives:
1. Students can expect to become familiar with the main concepts and ideas that comprise a number of
theories of social emotional development.
2. Students can expect to become familiar with the key research findings stemming from these theoretical
orientations.
3 Students can expect to be able to critically evaluate programs aimed at supporting social and emotional
. elopment.
4. Students can expect to be able to apply knowledge of social and emotional development to practical
problems of child development.
Requirements:
Students will complete an in-class exam and a series of short reflection papers. Attendance is mandatory and
will contribute to the final grade.
