COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is an introduction to Aboriginal Education in Canada and B.C. A critical examination of

historical and contemporary issues in education will illuminate the impact of federal, provincial and local

policies on the near demise of, and recent efforts to, revitalize Aboriginal languages and cultures. An

exploration of recent literature which highlights culturally appropriate and culturally based Aboriginal

education grounded in Aboriginal philosophies and the goal of self-determination will aim to promote an

understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal perspectives. Strategies for integrating this knowledge

into personal understanding and into the work and practice of educators will be explored.

OBJECTIVES

To understand how past and current federal, provincial and local policies impact on the state of

Aboriginal Education, language and culture

To examine and reflect on issues of racism, prejudice, discrimination, stereotyping and bias toward

Aboriginal people, and their implications for education

To begin to understand and appreciate diverse Aboriginal philosophies and woridviews as a foundation

for incorporating Aboriginal languages, cultures and perspectives into educational practice

To begin to identify and examine models, practices and curriculum suitable for Aboriginal Education.

ASSIGNMENTS
