COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to be an interactive and hands-on introduction to learning and teaching with
technology. It will provide an exciting beginning experience for those who desire to integrate technology
into classroom teaching. The course is also meant to introduce you to some of the social, cultural and
philosophical issues surrounding the use of technology in K-12 educational settings through formal and
informal discussions. The broad goal of the course is to empower pre-service and in-service teachers to
begin to use computer (and other) technologies from a basis of comfort, interest and meaning. As this is
an introductory course, we will not achieve great depth, however, it is expected that you will leave the
course with the technical confidence to pursue further learning on your own and some concrete ideas
about how to integrate technology into your teaching.
REQUIRED TEXT
Required readings will be provided online for this course.
REQUIREMENTS
You will need to have internet access to complete many of the assignments in this course. Therefore,
you must have internet access at home or be on campus at least 3-4 times during the week. Some online
activities may replace regular class time throughout the semester.
There will be some assignments that require specific software applications available on computers in the
Faculty of education's Centre for Educational Technology (CET). You will, therefore, need to schedule
some time to work in the CET outside of class time.
An e-mail list will be maintained for the course, to distribute announcements, etc. You will need to
activate your SFIJ email account (if you have not done so already) at the beginning of the semester and
check it on a regular basis each week, so you do not miss these.
Participatits are expected to attend all classes, to seriously engage in the themes and issues related to the
course, and to actively participate in face-to-face exercises, as well as online discussions.
COURSE WORK AND EVALUATION
