Course Description
EDUC252 provides opportunities for prospective teachers to begin their development as reflective
practitioners. Through readings, classroom activities and discussions, and interactions with
students and practicing teachers, students will be exposed to various educational issues and
questions. They will be given time to explore their own values and beliefs about education and
teaching.
Course Outcomes
Students will
• examine and begin to articulate their values and beliefs about education, teaching, learning,
schools communities;
• become more aware of the strengths they bring to teaching and of the areas in which they need
to grow;
• explore and response to a range of educational questions related to teaching, learning,
curriculum, teachers, students, schools;
• consider the purpose of and context for education in the post-modern era and global village;
and
• observe and reflect on learning/teaching experiences in the college and public school settings.
Required Resources
Readings from a variety of sources will be provided by the instructors.
Assignments
Assignments will take a variety of forms:
1. reflective response to topical readings, practical experiences, learning interactions, and
guided observations;
2.
preparation, presentation, and active participation in a variety of practical mini-assignments;
3.
reflection and assessment of personal knowledge, skills, and attitudes, including a final
reflective synthesis of leanings.
Grading
Assignments will be rated on a 4 point scale using criteria referencing. There will be three
categories of assignments.
• reflection papers
• connecting assignments
• final synthesis project
*Details, marking criteria, and grading procedures will be provided during the first class
session.
