DESCRIPTION
This course will consist of a study of major trends in educational practice from antiquity to the present.
May be applied towards the certificate in liberal arts. There are no prerequisites for this course.
Course Content:
This course traces the development of various conceptions of education from the roots of Western Culture in
the classical Greek writings of Plato and Aristotle, through to the Christian influence of St. Augustine and
the medieval influence of Erasmus. Educational writings of Enlightenment thinkers such as John Locke and
Jean-Jacques Rousseau provide conceptual background for understanding the contributions of John Dewey
to progressivist, democratic, and constructivist thinking prevalent in education today. The course concludes
with a survey of contemporary educational scholars such as Maxine Green, Paulo Freire, Gareth Matthews,
and Nell Noddings, whose work serves to edify and elevate our understanding of the history of education in
the Western World.
Course Requirements:
In addition to punctual attendance (10% of the final grade), students will prepare, present, and discuss
short (100-200 word) written assignments based on the readings (40%). There will also be "pop-quizzes"
pertaining to the reading assignments (30%), and a final exam (20%).
