COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will consist of a a study of major trends in Western educational practice from antiquity
to the present.
Topics will include:
• Education in the Ancient World
• Early Christian Schools
• Education in the Middle Ages
• The Impact of the Renaissance and
• Education in Early Modern Times
• The Discovery of Childhood
the Reformation on Education
• Nineteenth Century Concepts of Childhood and Education
• Twentieth Century Developments in Educational Thought and Practice
OBJECTIVES
a) To develop an understanding of the ways in which educational practice has developed and
changed over time in the Western world.
b)
To gain an understanding of the development of Western educational institutions and
educational systems in their historical contexts.
c)
To develop an awareness of the purposes of education and schooling in the past as well as the
present.
REQUIREMENTS
Course assessment will be based on:
written assignments
presentations
class participation.
