Description
&
Goals:
This course introduces students —in 'cool' and conventional ways - to a number of sociocultural issues that
surround local/global education today. 'Education' is reviewed in its broadest sense as
praxis
both in and 'out' of
traditional institutional walls. The goals are
• To elicit dialogues and 'critical thinking' (instead of providing a reassuring list of facts and
solutions/outcomes).
• To encourage prospective teachers to challenge assumptions about educational issues
• To foster ethical, knowledgeable, skillful, and compassionate teaching practice.
What do you need to participate? To be receptive to various perspectives and thoughts on educational issues. If
you can imagine connections between teaching children, youth, and adults, and critical theory, postmodernism,
gender, AIDS, social class, youth violence/drug and alcohol use, sexual health, racism, bullying in the school
yard, etc., you have already taken one step forward. Come prepared to voice your informed opinion and
challenge your own assumptions.
