DESCRIPTION
This course introduces students to a number of sociocultural issues surrounding local and global education
today. Education is reviewed in its broadest sense as a
praxis
both in and out of traditional institutional walls.
One of the goals is to encourage fruitful dialogues and critical thinking; it is not to provide a reassuring list of
facts and solutions/outcomes. Come prepared to voice an informed opinion and challenge your own
assumptions.
What do you need to participate? To be receptive to various perspectives and thoughts on educational
issues. If you can imagine connections between teaching children, youth and adults, and critical theory,
postmodernism, gender, identity, bilingualism/multilingualism, minority, racism, religious issues, First
Nations, bullying in the school yard, etc., you have already taken one step forward.
