Social functions of the school; societal trends affecting the institutions and practices of
education; dynamics of group behavior.
OBJECTIVES
1.
To provide
'a broad base of information about schooling as an institution in society,
particularly in Canada and British Columbia.
2.
To study the current issues affecting schooling in the country.
3.
To promote familiarity with the contributions made by the foundations disciplines (e.g.,
philosophy, history, sociology, psychology) in the understanding of the issues and
processes involved in schooling.
PROCEDURE
The course will involve lectures and discussions. Arrangements will be made to form
small discussion groups to facilitate interchange and analyses of issues and ideas.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Students will be expected to read the course materials and to participate in lectures and
discussions. Grades will be assigned on the following basis: three quizzes (60%; 20%
each) and one term paper (40%).
