Edition.
Material:

Course Requirements:
1.
Homework (20%)
Throughout the course there will be homework assigned. The homework will be a collection of
recommended questions along with some required questions. It is RECOMMENDED that you do the
recommended questions. The required questions are to be handed in at the beginning of class on the due
date. Of these only some will be marked. However, an answer key to all the required questions will be
provided when the homework is returned. Although it is understood, and expected, that you will
collaborate with each other in completing these homework assignments, each person must hand in their
own homework assignments. To avoid plagiarism (the university policy on plagiarism holds) a good
rule of thumb is that all spoken ideas are okay to share. There will be 7 assignments in all. They will
typically be assigned on Wednesdays and due the following Wednesday.
2. Group Project (20%)
In addition to the homework there will be a more substantive project to be done in groups of 2 or 3. The
details of this project are yet to be finalized, but I can tell you they will be due on March 28th.
3.
Midterm (20%)
There will be an in-class midterm on February 28th. The midterm will consist of course content covered
up to that point as well as some problem solving activities. A balance will be sought between

memorization and understanding.
4. Final (40%)
There will be a take home final at the end of the course. This will consist of you picking up and
dropping off the final at a specified time and place. No collaboration or outside help will be permitted for
this final.
5. Participation (0%)
Participation is mandatory for this course. This will take three forms - attendance, group work, and
involvement in class discussion. if class is missed for either a foreseeable or an unforeseeable reason,
please see me, and a makeup assignment will be arranged. A large part of every lesson will involve
small group work and whole class discussion. Your involvement in both of these is expected. Learning
happens through dialogues as well as through monologues.
