COURSE DESCRIPTION:
An introduction to a small but representative sample of basic questions and issues in education. Students
will examine questions relating to: the concept or idea of education; learning and the learner; teaching
and the teacher; and more generally, the broader contexts of education. This course also introduces
students to different ways of exploring educational questions and issues from philosophical and critical
analysis, to historical and cross-cultural studies, to empirical research. Cannot be taken for credit by
students with credit for 300 and 400 level education courses. Breadth-Humanities.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
• To engage in critical discussions inspired by questions regarding issues in education. For example:
What is our personal and societal history of education? What makes a "good" teacher? How is
education related to social justice, politics, and ecology? What are the roles of imagination and
empowerment in education? What is the purpose of education in the digital age? What is the work that
we do as teachers?
• To enable students to articulate their answers to these questions and to introduce new questions
through academic writing and interactive presentations.
• To model a variety of methods of classroom organization and styles of teaching.
