COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is an introductory course designed to explore a range of educationally important ideas and is aimed
at students who may or may not be interested in pursuing educational studies. Selected issues and
questions, in conjunction with those that arise from students' discussions and interests, will be explored
in a variety of ways. The course will reflect principles of learning, require active participation in
activities and discussions, model reflective practice, involve group and individual presentations, employ
dialogic pedagogy and develop as inquiries into educationally significant topics. Together, we will
examine complexities of teaching, learning, roles of teachers and learners, role of education, educational
structures, critical pedagogy, culturally situated pedagogy, place based education, technology in
education and curriculum philosophy. Students will engage in collaborative and self-formative
processes to develop a deeper understanding of the role of education in current global conditions.
Students will be expected to complete all assigned tasks, develop their writing abilities, enhance their
understanding of educational issues and develop questions for further study.
Course assignment details will be given during the first class.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Regular attendance
Active Participation - 20%
Group presentation - 20%
Individual paper- 20%
Learning Journals and inclass assignments -20%
Final exam - 20%
The completion of course requirements forms the basis for evaluation. The final evaluation process will
comprise a self evaluation and evaluation by the course instructor.
