COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is intended for beginning students who are interested in considering educational issues from an
informed perspective. Students will be expected to engage in critical examination of the enduring "big
questions" of education as well as the way that they play out in the particular issues of this time and place.
We will deal with a broad range of topics, including:
• The goals of education and the nature of schools
• Learning and the learner
• Teaching and the roles of education professionals
• Societal influences on the public education system - e.g. political, economic, technological...
A detailed course outline will be presented during the first week of classes.
Learning activities will include reading and responding orally and in writing, individual and group work,
library and on-line research. Discussion and writing skills will be highlighted during in-class work.

REQUIRED READINGS:
A list of required readings (articles and book chapters) will be presented during the first week of classes.
Students will have the option of purchasing a photocopied set of the readings from the instructor.
